This lithograph circa 1700 from a private collection shows cannibals in the process of devouring several women who were probably captured in an attack on an early settlement.  Even allowing for the crude artwork, the picture possibly provides some insight into how cannibalism, rightly or wrongly, has become associated with barbarism.  Those preconceptions might well change if more people could be exposed to the practice as it exists today.
