A NATIVE DIVORCE

Women captured in raids on settlements were often given the opportunity to marry into the plundering tribe.  In many tribes, however, the obligatory wedding feast often required that each groom divorce one of his existing wives if he wished to wed one of the captives who was more to his liking.  It is interesting to note that, as the above figure shows, it was customary in many villages for the groom to wear one of the bride's undergarments on his head during the celebration.
